Ossur Cold Rush Cold Therapy Unit

The Cold Rush Cold Therapy System by Össur is a mechanical circulation cold therapy device that reduces localized pain and swelling after surgery or trauma. A circulation pump moves a chilled water-and-ice mixture through a closed-loop hydraulic circuit to a cold therapy pad, delivering steady, consistent cooling to the treated joint or limb.

Built with a brushless motor for quiet operation, a locking lid, and insulated reservoir walls, the unit runs on a safe, low-voltage 12V power supply and is intended for single-patient use.

How It Works

Cold Rush circulates cooled water from the ice-and-water reservoir through insulated hoses to the pad placed over the treatment area. According to the manufacturer, the motor supports steady flow and consistent pad temperature, similar to designs used in larger mobile cooling equipment. An adjustable flow control knob lets the patient or caregiver set the temperature within the range prescribed by their physician.

Contraindications

Do not use on patients with:

• Hematological dyscrasias predisposing to thrombosis (e.g., cryoglobulinemia, sickle cell disease)
• Compromised local circulation (arteriosclerosis, ischemia)
• Neurologic impairment, polyneuropathy, or nerve damage causing decreased skin sensitivity
• Cognitive or communication impairments preventing accurate, timely feedback
• Raynaud's disease or other vasospastic conditions
• Buerger's disease or significant vascular impairment
• Cold hypersensitivity (cold urticaria) or history of cold-related injury
• Severe cardiovascular disease, hypercoagulation disorders, poor circulation, or extremely low blood pressure
• Localized unstable skin conditions or infection in the treatment area
• Tissue inflammation from recent injury or chronic inflammatory flare-up

Care Instructions

• Drain all water from the unit after each use
• Before prolonged storage, circulate water with 2 tbsp liquid bleach or 3 oz (88 ml) of 3% hydrogen peroxide on MAX for 5 minutes, then drain
• Store in a cool, dark place with the lid slightly open; avoid sun exposure and extreme heat
• Flush with clean water before reuse; inspect hoses and pad for damage before each use
